Communication through social media characterizes modern lifestyles and relationships, including family interactions. The present study aims at deepening the role that parents’ perceptions about social media effects on family systems can exert within their family functioning, specifically referring to the relationship between collective family efficacy and open communications within family systems with adolescents. A questionnaire to detect the openness of family communications, the collective family efficacy and the perceptions about the impacts of social media on family systems was administered to 227 Italian parents who had one or more teenage children, and who use Facebook and WhatsApp to communicate with them. From the results, these perceptions emerge as a mediator in the relationship between the collective family efficacy and the openness of communications, suggesting that it is not only the actual impact of social media on family systems that matters but also parents’ perceptions about it and how much they feel able to manage their and their children’s social media use without damaging their family relationships. Thus, the need to foster parents’ positive perceptions about social media’s potential impact on their family relationships emerges. A strategy could be the promotion of knowledge on how to functionally use social media.

Promoting health behaviour in Portuguese children via Short Message Service: The efficacy of a text-messaging programme

A Short Message Service programme was adapted to monitor three health behaviours and provide supportive feedback. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the programme to increase fruit/vegetable consumption and physical activity and to decrease screen time. A total of 139 Portuguese children, aged 8-10 years, grouped by classroom, were randomly assigned to an intervention (8 weeks of monitoring/feedback) or a control condition. Participants had their key behaviours assessed at baseline, post-intervention and follow-up. A three-level hierarchical linear model was developed. Results showed that the monitoring and feedback programme significantly increased fruit and vegetable consumption over time.

RESUMOEste artigo centra-se na análise da circulação social da notícia em espaços privados de 32 jovens portugueses que quando foram entrevistados tinham alguma forma de participação cívica diferenciada no tipo e na intensidade. Identificaram-se cinco perfis: Consumidores informados, Consumidores pouco informados, Consumidores emergentes de informação, Consumidores em torno de um projeto do Eu e Cidadãos online. Estas tipologias revelaram a importân-cia dos capitais sociais e cívicos, a ligação intrínseca entre a vida quotidiana e os hábitos de consumo de notícias e a importância da família no consumo de notícias, muito em especial as da esfera política.Palavras-chave: jovens, notícias, esfera privada, culturas cívicas, quotidiano, habitus. RESUMENEste artículo se centra en el análisis de la circulación social de las noticias en espacios privados, de una muestra de 32 jóvenes portugueses que fueron entrevistados porque presentaban alguna forma de participación ciudadana de diversos tipos e intensidades. Se identificaron cinco perfiles: consumidores informados, consumidores no informados, consumidores emergentes de información y consumidores en torno al proyecto Eu y Cidadãos online. Estas tipologías revelan la importancia del capital social y cívico, la relación intrínseca entre la vida cotidiana y los hábitos de consumo de noticias y la importancia de la familia en el consumo de noticias, muy especialmente en la esfera política.
