The diverse diets of common planktonic rotifers are described in detail from field and laboratory observations and experiments. Also considered are methodological approaches, rotifer feeding mechanisms, and the availability in natural waters of less well-known food items (detritus, picoplankton, protozoans). Despite much variation among and within rotifer genera, food niches of planktonic rotifers can be subdivided into four broad, overlapping categories defined by the predominant types and sizes of food ingested: (1) microphagous rotifers that eat fine detritus/organic aggregates, picoplankton, and 2-10 μm nanoplankton; (2) polyphagous rotifers that eat the above items, larger nanoplankton, and small (20-50 μm) microplankton; (3) macrophagous algivores that eat 5-50 μm algae; and (4) macrophagous omnivores/predators that eat 5-250 μm algae, protozoans, and metazoans. These diet-based categories have ecological advantages over categories based on rotifer morphology or feeding mode. The information on diets assembled here is important for understanding: (1) the population dynamics of planktonic rotifers and their food organisms; (2) the position of rotifers in classical and microbial food webs;(3) the seasonality, spatial distribution, and species diversity of rotifers in plankton communities; and (4) food overlap, and thus potential resource competition, among planktonic protozoans, rotifers, and crustaceans.

Asplanchna girodi (de Guerne, 1888) is a predatory rotifer of wide distribution in temperate and tropical freshwater ecosystems. Of this species, little is known about its diet and its food preferences under natural conditions, since most of the work related to this aspect has been carried out under laboratory conditions. During a short monitoring program at La García Reservoir, a high Andean equatorial reservoir located in the central region of the department of Antioquia (Colombia), in which this species reached a total density of 2.296,2 ind.L-1, studied the composition of the A. girodi diet based only on the direct observation, under the microscope, of the organisms contained in the stomachs of all the individuals present in the simples. Between June and September 2014, integrated samples composed of five depths were taken monthly at three monitoring stations in the entire water column, with a sampling bottle of 10 L capacity. The collected material was filtered through a 30µm plankton net of mesh eye. It was found that A. girodi, presented a wide trophic preference that included the foraging of a dinoflagellate (Ceratium, Schrank), five species of rotifers and a cladoceran. These results lead to the conclusion that A. girodi is possibly an opportunistic species, since consumption is directed at the species with the highest availability (in this case Ceratium) and with the greatest energy savings, since no investment is made in the search for specific prey and in turn would become an important factor in controlling phytoplankton populations.

Este es el primer estudio relacionado con el ensamble zooplanctónico en el embalse La García, un embalse altoandino ecuatorial localizado en la región central del departamento de Antioquia (Colombia). El objetivo principal del trabajo fue conocer la composición y abundancia del ensamble zooplanctónico en el embalse y establecer si existe alguna relación entre éstas, y las variables físicas y químicas medidas. Mensualmente, entre junio y septiembre de 2014, en tres localidades se tomaron muestras a cinco profundidades con la ayuda de una botella muestreadora (10 L de capacidad). El material recogido fue filtrado a través de una red de plancton de 30 micras de ojo de malla, identificado y contado bajo microscopio invertido empleando una celda de recuento de Sedgwick-Rafter. De todas las variables fisicoquímicas las que más influencia ejercieron en el ensamble zooplanctónico fueron la profundidad y la pluviosidad, alcanzando la mayor densidad durante la época más seca, en la estación más somera y con la menor transparencia.
