Diminished adhesion of CD4+ T cells from dialysis patients to extracellular matrix and its components fibronectin and laminin

Abstract: T cells of dialysis patients exhibit abnormal adhesive activity, which may be due to an acquired cellular defect induced by uraemic milieu. CAPD patients show a greater degree of adhesion impairment, possibly due to their lower concentrations of serum albumin.

“…vaccination with 40 Ìg HBsAg at 0, 1, 2, and 6 months is only about 70% [10]. The immunity is characteristically compromised in uraemic, especially cellular immunity, with disruption of various T lymphocyte functions [11]. Many vaccination schemes and modifications for non-responding PCHD are proposed today.…”

“…We can also speculate on more specific, synergistic interactions between the clinical and cytokine variables. Low serum albumin levels have been strongly linked to impaired immune function, bacteremia, and sepsis in hemodialysis patients (Zeltzer et al , 1997; Katneni and Hedayati, 2007). In the context of impaired immunity, low levels of IL‐12 and Ang could exacerbate a predisposition to infection.…”

“…This technique requires easily obtained, commercially available micro-flow chambers in combination with a syringe pump, greatly simplifying the equipment necessary to model blood flow and shear stress as compared to other models. 9 Another major advantage of this assay is that specific signaling cascades and the resulting activation state of individual integrins can be cleanly studied through the use of engineered CHO cells expressing human adhesion molecules of interest. Additionally, the combination of quantitative data with live cell imaging is a significant advantage of this method.…”
