Dimethylamine and ammonia measurements with ion chromatography during the CLOUD4 campaign

Abstract: Abstract. The CLOUD project investigates the influence of galactic cosmic rays on the nucleation of new particles in an environmental chamber at CERN. Dimethylamine (DMA) was injected intentionally into the CLOUD chamber to reach atmospherically relevant levels away from sources (up to 100 pptv) in order to study its effect on nucleation with sulphuric acid and water at 278 K. Quantification of DMA and also background ammonia (NH 3 ) was performed with ion chromatography (IC). The IC method used together with … Show more

“…The facility is described in more detail by Kirkby et al (2011). Thorough cleaning with ultra-pure water and heat (373 K) decreases contaminant levels such as ammonia and amines to a few pptv, and volatile organic compounds to below 1 ppbv (Praplan et al, 2012;Schnitzhofer et al, 2014). However, only heating and flushing with the ultra-pure air of the chamber has been performed between experiments with ammonia and dimethyl amine and the experiments presented in this paper, which is somewhat less efficient than the use of water.…”

“…2.4). We can give some estimate of the contaminant levels of the dominant amine, C 2 H 7 N, based on measurements from later CLOUD campaigns when dimethylamine was also added into the chamber in several experiments (Praplan et al, 2012;Almeida et al, 2013). These estimates are based on direct measurements of dimethylamine concentrations down to 0.2 pptv performed during the later experiments and on measurements of the content of C 2 H 7 N in clusters seen by the APi-TOF.…”

“…For the scope of this paper it is sufficient to note that just the relative change in the DMA signal is required to obtain the wall loss rate, while the absolute measurement is not a necessity. Overall, the different methods for determination of the DMA mixing ratios, including also the direct IC measurement (Praplan et al, 2012), yield consistent results and the error bars in Fig. 6 indicate the uncertainty.…”
