The functionalized triblock polymer for the preparation of self-assembly biomaterials, Chol-(CL) n -Chol, was synthesized through ring-opening polymerization of ecaprolactone (e-CL) following by chain-extension reaction. The chemical structure of functionalized triblock polymer was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and 1 H-NMR. The molecular weight of the functionalized polymer increased with decreasing feed ratio of the initiator cholesterol (Chol) to the monomer e-CL. Liquid crystalline properties and the self-assembly behavior of the functionalized polymer were validated by Wide angle X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and polarizing light microscope. The results showed that Chol-(CL) n -Chol ( n 40) exhibited liquid crystallinity in particular temperature ranges because of the incorporation of the cholesteryl moiety. In addition, the functionalized triblock polymer can be homogeneously blended with high molecular weight poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL), which offers the possibility to modify the properties of biomaterials based on PCL. Mixing a small amount of a Chol-(CL) n -Chol functionalized polymer with PCL, or coating a thin layer of the functionalized polymer on the surface of a PCL-based implant may modify cell response.

Light‐Emitting Chiral Nematic Dimers with Anomalous Odd‐Even Effect

In this report, based on the results derived from the extensive study into the thermal and photophysical properties, an anomalous mesomorphic behavior of photoluminescent, chiral nematic (N*) liquid crystalline dimers, belonging to two different series has been revealed. They comprise cholesterol and fluorescent three-ring Schiff base or salicylaldimine core interlinked via an ω-oxyalkanoyloxy spacer of varying length and parity. The effect of molecular structure on the liquid crystal (LC) behavior and photophysical properties of both the series has been probed by varying the length of the terminal n-alkoxy tails for a fixed (odd or even) parity of the spacer. The detailed investigations using complementary techniques not only evidenced the existence of the N* phase in all the dimers synthesized but also the occurrence of an intriguing odd-even effect; blue phases (BPs) exist in all the dimers comprising even-membered spacer, which surprisingly remains totally absent in their odd-membered counterparts. While the results reported hitherto are exactly opposite to the aforesaid findings, this atypical behavior has been interpreted in terms of the over-all shape of the dimers rendered by the orientation of terminal tails. Photophysical studies carried out clearly revealed the intrinsic light emitting feature of the dimers not only in their dilute solutions but also in their three condensed states viz., solid, N* phase, and isotropic liquid state; the emission intensities of the N* phase varies with the change in temperature, as expected. CD spectra of the N* phase recorded as a function of temperature show bisignate CD band characteristically, signifying large chiral correlations in the molecular selfassembly, while the origin of bands from positive to negative region suggests a right-handed twist of the N* helix.

The effects of perfluorinated and semiperfluorinated hydrocarbon units on the self-assembly of rod-like, disc-like, polycatenar, taper- and star-shaped, dendritic, and bent-core liquid crystalline (LC) materials is reviewed. The influence of fluorinated segments is analyzed on the basis of their contributions to the cohesive energy density, molecular shape, conformational flexibility, micro-segregation, space filling, and interface curvature. Though the focus is on recent progress in the last decade, previous main contributions, general aspects of perfluorinated organic molecules, and the basics of LC self-assembly are also briefly discussed to provide a complete overall picture. The main focus is on structure-property-relations and the use of micro-segregation to tailor mesophase morphologies. Especially polyphilic molecules with perfluorinated segments provide new modes of LC self-assembly, leading to ordered fluids with periodic multi-compartment structures and enhanced complexity compared to previously known systems.
