The negative influence of timber harvesting on the forest environment is reflected through damage to the residual trees, regeneration, and forest soil. Considering that skidding, a popular extraction method, can cause substantial and severe damage to the remaining stand, the aim of this research was to determine damage to residual trees during skidding by an LKT 81T cable skidder, including oxen bunching. The research was conducted in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, in an uneven-aged mixed fir (Abies alba Mill.) and spruce (Picea abies L.) forest with pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) on limestone soils. Tree felling was conducted using a Husqvarna 372 XP chainsaw. Extraction operations caused damage to 6.31% of the residual trees in the stand. The most damage was “removed bark” (65.34%) and occurred on the lower parts of the tree, the butt end (55.11%) and root collar (32.39%). The average size of the damage was 197.08 cm2. A statistically significant correlation was found between the damage position and the diameter at the breast height (p < 0.05) and the damage position and damage size (p < 0.01) by Spearman correlation analysis. The conducted analysis by the chi-squared test showed that there is a statistically significant difference in the proportion of damage for trees with different distances to the nearest skid road (p = 0.0487), but the share of damaged trees did not decrease by increasing the distance from the skid road.

Rutting measurements are a significant part of scientific research on the impact of forest vehicles on the forest soils and damage to the forest transport infrastructure. Although photogrammetric methods of measurement or measurements based on LiDAR (light detection and ranging) data are increasingly being used for rutting measurements, the previous research conducted using these methods indicated the challenge of recording water-filled ruts. For this reason, it is necessary to define a reliable method of rutting field measurement in lowland forest stands characterized by a high level of groundwater that fills the ruts shortly after the passage of forest vehicles. This research analyzed the measurement accuracy using a total station and a GNSS RTK device with a CROPOS correction base in relation to the measuring rod that represented the reference method. Based on recorded and processed data, ruts are displayed in two ways: as net and as gross value of rut depth. The analysis of net rutting revealed a statistically significant difference between the calculated rut depths based on measurements with a GNSS RTK device and other methods. On average, the net rutting measured by the GNSS RTK device was 2.86 cm smaller than that of the reference method. When calculating the gross rutting, which consisted of the net rut depth and the bulge height, no statistically significant difference was found between the measurement methods used. Based on this result, the bulge height was also analyzed, and showed a statistically significant difference between the data recorded by the GNSS RTK device and other methods. It can be concluded that measuring the depth of ruts with a total station gives accurate data and represents the optimal modern field measurement method for the same or similar terrain conditions. In contrast, the GNSS RTK device, which constantly gives higher elevation points, can be used to measure gross rutting.

As the forestry approaches have been formed according to the demands and aspirations of the society, the forest sector implies different concerns such as social, economic, and environmental. Harvesting and extraction of wood at low-cost, protection of stands against degradation and changes in land use, proper implementation of afforestation and forest extension, conservation of endemic species, preservation of soil, providing jobs, and supporting national and domestic development were the cases that, depending on the time and area conditions, have a different priority for foresters. Of course, all this has always been discussed by the shareholders in the forest sector with the main attention to forest sustainability. But the question is: are forestry approaches compatible with the changes in the world today? Today, with increasing environmental concerns, as discussed at the Glasgow 2021 Conference, the importance of forests and their protection has doubled, and it seems that forestry practices in the world need a new approach. In addition to climate change, increasing human population and regional and global economic changes affect the use of forests and the form of forest management and utilization. This paper aimed to take an analytical look at this issue and examine the current situation in five countries. It was also targeted with the help of the DPSIR Framework to elaborate the social consequences of the situation and analysis was presented about what to do or not. The emphasis of this paper is that forest managers and policymakers need to modify and adapt the plans and methods in a way that is appropriate to the progress of time and its changes, while protecting forests and ensuring their sustainability, limiting non-professionals from involving directly in the decision-making process.
