Dimensionality of Suicide Behaviors: Results within Two Samples from Two Different Countries

Abstract: Across two countries and two languages, this research examined the multidimensional associations of suicide behaviors (i.e., life-time attempts, life-time communication of intent to others, life-time self-harming, life-time suicide notes, and current suicide ideation) and empirically relevant psychological risk factors (i.e., different facets of mental pain, perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, and acquired capability), controlling for depressive symptoms. For the Portuguese sample, two underlying… Show more

“…SBQ‐R was previously validated in the Iranian population by the same first author (Amini‐Tehrani et al, 2020). Although Osman et al (2001) conceptualized suicide risk to be a function of previous SRB, some recent studies suggested suicidality to be a multidimensional phenomenon (Campos, Holden, Spínola, Marques, & Lambert, 2019; Holden et al, 2020), resulting in the transition from ideations to attempts to be a matter of distinct risk factors (Klonsky et al, 2016). Therefore, the current study employed the SBQ‐R items as distinct measures of SRB, mainly including LSB, PY‐SI, and PLFS.…”

“…The data used here were extracted from a large database of results, some previously used in other published studies. The present research includes four samples, a new sample (n = 324) and three samples from previously published studies (Campos et al, 2016;Campos, Holden, Spinola, & Lambert, 2019;Campos, Simões, Costa, Pio, & Holden, 2019).…”

“…Assessment of Writing a Suicide Note -Writing a suicide note was assessed using the question "Have you ever written a suicide (farewell) note/message?" (see Campos et al, 2021). Participants had three response options "0-No; 1-Yes, I started at least one, but I didn't finish writing it; 2-Yes, I finished writing at least one".…”
