Diluting europium spins – a magnetic and 151Eu Mössbauer spectroscopic investigation of the solid solution Eu1−xSrxPtIn2

Abstract: The indide EuPtIn2 (MgCuAl2 type, Cmcm, a = 448.23(4), b = 1068.64(11), c = 784.09(8) pm, wR2 = 0.0432, 466 F2 values, 16 variables) was synthesized by induction-melting of the elements and subsequent annealing.

“…The expansion of both the b ‐axis and the interatomic distances is in line with the increasing ionic radius of the M 2+ cations (Ca 2+ 106 pm, Eu 2+ 112 pm, Sr 2+ 127 pm, Ba 2+ 143 pm) . It is also in line with what has been observed for the isostructural M PtIn 2 ( M =Ca, Sr, Ba, Eu) series . The longest In−In distance found in BaPtIn 2 , however, is 391 pm (sum of covalent radii 300 pm), which is significantly shorter compared to the Al−Al distance of 471 pm (sum of covalent radii 250 pm) found in BaPtAl 2 .…”

“…We have recently extended our research on MgCuAl 2 type phases and studied the complete solid solution Eu 1– x Sr x PtIn 2 . It is absolutely remarkable, that the ferromagnetic ground state with T C = 32.5 K for EuPtIn 2 remains stable within the whole solid solution and the Curie temperature almost linearly decreases to 3.1 K in going to Eu 0.1 Sr 0.9 PtIn 2 .…”
