Dillenia suffruticosa exhibited antioxidant and cytotoxic activity through induction of apoptosis and G2/M cell cycle arrest

Abstract: It is suggested that the cytotoxicity of the active extracts in HeLa was due to the induction of apoptosis and cell cycle arrest at G2/M.

“…Similar results for the O. ficus-indica f. inermis flowers reported the presence of TPC (159.76 mg GAE/g of extract) and yielded 23.64% (Alimi et al, 2011). Opuntia flowers contained rich amount of polyphenols comparing to Alpinia zerumbet and Dillenia suffruticosa flowers (Armania et al, 2013;Elzaawely et al, 2007). But also many investigations showed higher TPC in flowers, compared to Opuntia flowers (Barreira et al, 2008;Ho et al, 2007).…”

“…This plant has been reported to exhibit antimicrobial (Wiart et al, 2004) and antiviral properties (Muliawan, 2008). Our previous studies reported that the root dichloromethane extract of D. suffruticosa (DCM-DS) from sequential solvent extraction was the most cytotoxic towards breast cancer cells as compared to hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extract (Armania et al, 2013a). DCM-DS induced G 0 /G 1 phase cell cycle arrest and apoptosis towards human caspase-3 deficient MCF-7 breast cancer cells by modulating the expression of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and protein kinase B (PKB or AKT) at gene and protein level Tor et al, 2014;Armania et al, 2013b).…”
