Community Based Conservation (CBC) has become the catch-all solution to the social and ecological problems plaguing traditional top-down, protectionist conservation approaches. CBC has been particularly popular throughout Africa as a way to gain local support for wildlife conservation measures that have previously excluded local people and their development needs. This article shows that, despite the rhetoric of devolution and participation associated with new CBC models, conservation planning in Tanzania remains a top-down endeavour, with communities and their specialized socio-ecological knowledge delegated to the margins. In addition to the difficulties associated with the transfer of power from state to community hands, CBC also poses complex challenges to the culture or institution of conservation. Using the example of the Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem, the author shows how local knowledge and the complexities of ecological processes challenge the conventional zone-based conservation models, and argues that the insights of local Maasai knowledge claims could better reflect the ecological and social goals of the new CBC rhetoric.

Participatory mapping of local land use as the basis for planning and decision-making has become widespread around the globe. However, still relatively little is known about the conceptual underpinnings of geographic information produced through participatory mapping in given cultural and linguistic settings. In this paper, we therefore address the seemingly simple question of what is (not) represented on maps through an exploratory case study comparing land use categories participants represented on sketch maps with categories elicited through more language-focused ethnographic fieldwork. To explore landscape categorization, we conducted sketch mapping with 29 participants and in-depth ethnographic fieldwork with 19 participants from the Takana indigenous people in the Bolivian Amazon. Sketch mapping resulted in 74 different feature types, while we elicited 156 landscape categories used in language, of which only 23 overlapped with feature types from the sketch mapping. Vegetation categories were highly diversified in language but seldom represented on maps, while more obviously anthropogenic features were represented on sketch maps. Furthermore, participants seldom drew culturally important landscape categories such as fallow plots or important plant harvesting sites on maps, with important potential consequences for natural resource management.

Resumo:Apesar dos debates enriquecedores na educação cartográfica brasileira nos últimos 15 anos, ainda há poucos trabalhos que visam aplicar mapas e mapeamentos como instrumentos para provocar mudanças na sociedade. O referido artigo tem como objetivo discutir as relações entre a educação, a geografia cidadã e a cartografia escolar, tendo como destaque as atividades das chamadas expedições geográficas do geógrafo americano William Bunge que procurou estabelecer uma ligação mais estreita entre comunidades e estudantes nos Estados Unidos nos anos 70. Um estudo de caso de um projeto em um ambiente educacional do Sul do Ceará é usado como exemplo de militância cartográfica para indicar e definir possíveis caminhos futuros para a educação no Brasil. School Cartography in Action: Pathways to a Citizen Geography and Cartography Activism in Brazil Abstract:Despite the rich debates in cartographic education in Brazil during the last 15 years, there are only few studies that seek to apply maps and mappings as instruments to provoke changes in society. This text aims to discuss the relationship between education, geography of citizenship, and school cartography, highlighting the so-called geographical expeditions organized by the American geographer William Bunge who aimed to establish a stronger relation between communities and students in the United States in the 1970s. A case study from an education-based project from the South of Ceará is used as an example of cartographic militancy, with the intent to indicate and define possible paths for the education in Brazil in the future.
