Dijet Production by Double Pomeron Exchange at the Fermilab Tevatron

Abstract: We report the first observation of dijet events with a double Pomeron exchange topology produced in pp collisions at s√=1800GeV. The events are characterized by a leading antiproton, two jets in the central pseudorapidity region, and a large rapidity gap on the outgoing proton side. We present results on jet kinematics and production rates, compare them with corresponding results from single diffractive and inclusive dijet production, and test factorization

“…The CDF collaboration has presented [18] It should be noted that in the above experiment the protons were not detected and the DPE events were enhanced by a rapidity gap requirement on the proton side. Thus, in principle, there is no specified cuts on the outgoing proton 4 .…”

“…The exclusive dijet production was first studied by CDF in Run I data and a limit of σ excl <3.7 nb (95% CL) was placed. 114 This study was continued in Run II when the observation of the exclusive dijet production was reported. 113 The exclusive signal is extracted using the dijet mass fraction method: the ratio R jj ≡ M jj /M X of the dijet mass M jj to the total mass M X of the final state is formed and used to discriminate between the signal of exclusive dijets, defined as R jj >0.8, and the background of inclusive DPE dijets, expected to have a continuous distribution concentrated at lower R jj values.…”
