Dihydroxyacetone: An Updated Insight into an Important Bioproduct

Abstract: Currently obtained from glycerol through microbial fermentation, the demand of 1,3‐dihydroxyacetone (DHA) has significantly grown during the course of the last decade, driven by the consumer passion for a tan and increasing awareness of UV photodamage to the skin caused by prolonged exposure to the sun. We provide an updated bioeconomy perspective into a valued bioproduct (DHA), whose supply and production from glycerol, we argue in this study, will rapidly expand and diversify, with important global health be… Show more

“…Furthermore, DHA has a characteristic odor. Moreover DHA tans the skin and is widely used for this purpose . In any cream, bad odor must be considered as an undesirable side effect, and in a barrier cream the property of tanning as well as bleaching of the skin must be as well.…”

“…Moreover DHA tans the skin and is widely used for this purpose. 16 In any cream, bad odor must be considered as an undesirable side effect, and in a barrier cream the property of tanning as well as bleaching of the skin must be as well. Despite this, those chemicals were included in this study because of other described properties, such as a reducing capacity and being innocuous to the skin.…”

“…With the aim to verify the applicability of the present system, it was further examined for the whole‐cell biotransformation of glycerol into 1,3‐dihydroxyacetone (DHA) using recombinant E. coli BL21 (DE3) overexpressing glycerol dehydrogenase (GlyDH). Methods to convert glycerol, an inexpensive and readily available byproduct of biodiesel industry, into DHA have received considerable interest due to the fact that DHA is widely used as an important building block in the cosmetic, medical, food, and agricultural industries . To compare the present method with those of previously reported systems, we applied reaction conditions analogous to those reported in previous studies .…”
