Background: Many libraries, archives and museums (LAMs) all over the world have begun digitising their collections, and with a good number of these institutions failing to sustain their digitisation projects because they cannot afford to, it is best to find ways to lessen the financial burden that comes with digitisation.Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the possible benefits and challenges if LAMs in South Africa were to collaborate on digitisation efforts.Method: A mono-method qualitative study was undertaken. The objectives were addressed by making use of a literature review and by conducting non-standardised, semi-structured interviews with 21 interviewees located at different LAMs.Results: It was found that funding for digitisation projects was a major problem, while collaboration between LAMs would involve sharing the financial burden among several institutions. In addition, reasons preventing LAMs from forming collaborative partnerships for the purpose of digitisation were also identified. A lack of collaborative digitisation policies and funding, both internally and between LAMs, was found to be a major obstacle for the formation of such partnerships. In determining the relevance of the research, it was important to determine whether or not LAMs in South Africa were open to collaboration and responses to this question were positive. It can thus be concluded that the results of this study can be used to motivate and guide collaboration partnerships for the purpose of digitisation between South African LAMs.Conclusion: It was concluded that collaboration could indeed appreciably alleviate problems related to digitisation, the most prominent being the cost associated with such endeavours.

Investigating digitization and digital preservation strategies for theses and dissertations: a case study of Quaid-I-Azam university, Pakistan

Purpose The purpose of this study is to outline the process, procedures and techniques used for digitization and digital preservation of theses and dissertations (TDs) collection at the Central Library of Quaid-I-Azam University, Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach Since the phenomenon under investigation is exploratory in nature, a case study qualitative paradigm was used to conduct this study. Findings The findings of the study offer a brief overview of the cost-effective solution that leveraged in-house expertise for the digital preservation of TDs. This led to the establishment of a knowledge repository hosting a substantial collection of approximately 25,857 electronic theses and dissertations, accessible online since August 2023. This project digitally preserved approximately 9,387 TDs on CDs/DVDs, and scanned about 15,000 print TDs, comprising around 1,399,244 pages. The cost incurred per page, including labor and rent of a photocopy machine, was just Rs 0.548 making it a cost-effective technique. The total cost incurred for this process was just 0.768m Pakistani rupees (equivalent to $2,509.55). The findings revealed key challenges, including administrative, financial, technical and copyright issues, that impede the effective execution of the project. Research limitations/implications This case study is limited to one Pakistani public sector university library. This case study holds significance in terms of practical insights and implications for academic institutions and library administrators in other developing countries like Pakistan, which have similar economic, social and technical circumstances. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first-ever study conducted to elucidate the cost-effective strategy adopted for digitally preserved TDs without additional financial and human resources while creating a knowledge repository.

Digital Status Related to Manuscripts and Rare Materials in Government Punjab Public Library Lahore, Pakistan

The main objective of this study is to investigate, explore and analyze the digitization of manuscripts and rare materials at the Government Punjab Public Library (GPPL) in Lahore, Pakistan. For this purpose mixed methods approach were used to study the status of digitization, selection criteria and challenges in GPPL. Outcomes of the study exposed a significant gap among the targeted materials and current progress. Only a small portion of the rare materials was digitized. The selection criteria of rare materials for digitization prioritized by experts was the significance of historical records and its condition. This study further explained that the digitization of the library project faced many challenges, including budgetary constraints, lack of staff training, inadequate metadata creation and limited public access. The major recommendations of this study about digitization of the remaining materials were standardize library staff training and creation of metadata, establish online access platforms dedicated to users and promoting a culture of innovation among library staff. According to these recommendations, the Punjab Public Library can significantly increase its digitization efforts, Preservation and can ensure the online access of its valuable manuscripts and rare materials for future generations. This study also explores and examines the questions as: What is the significance of history records and its conditions? What is the status of the digitization of manuscripts/rare material? What is the selection criteria of digitization of manuscripts/rare materials? What are the challenges faced by digitalization of the library project? How to cope with these challenges?
