Digitalizing the maritime industry: A case study of technology acquisition and enabling advanced manufacturing technology

Abstract: The need to reduce time-to-market and reduce cost-of-non-quality drives organizations operating within the advanced manufacturing industry to explore, and source technology externally. This paper reports on a case study of enabling technology for advanced manufacturing and strategies for technology acquisition. The data is collected through in-depth structured interviews with five global technology experts. The interview guide is developed based in a dataset collected in the Norwegian maritime industry. An ind… Show more

“…2 The technological sophistication of the shipbuilding industry is often underestimated, because the frequency of innovations in this field is not as high as in others. 17 In any case, these developments cannot be easily measured and translated into figures as in other industries, which does not mean that there is no technological sophistication. However, other assets, such as distribution networks, are not as relevant in this industry as in others; low cost and technological sophistication being the main differentiating factors in this industry, 14 and like other sectors, being in continuous review of the technologies that can be implemented.…”

“…Digital technology can be an enabler for growth that supports the next generation of vessels; however, it must be understood as a means to realize possibilities, not an end [85]. When introducing AM technology, there exist barriers for acquiring these pieces of equipment [61]. Despite the potential advantages or capabilities of the technology, companies are rarely capable to solely focus on the monetary value of acquisition, but also the cost of materials, operating cost, maintenance and the training of personnel to manage the system are also introduce barriers for successful technology acquisition.…”
