Digitalizing the Closing-of-the-Loop for Supply Chains: A Transportation and Blockchain Perspective

Abstract: The circular economy is gaining in importance globally and locally. The COVID-19 crisis, as an exceptional event, showed the limits and the fragility of supply chains, with circular economy practices as a potential solution during and post-COVID. Reverse logistics (RL) is an important dimension of the circular economy which allows management of economic, social, and environmental challenges. Transportation is needed for RL to effectively operate, but research study on this topic has been relatively limited. Ne… Show more

“… Micropayments and Micro-finance Applications : IOTA also has a built-in native cryptocurrency support named the same (iota) that can be used for micropayments in pay-as-you-go services. Supply Chain and Logistics Applications : Covid-19 has exposed several vulnerabilities of current supply chain systems where tracking and tracing for better transparency can be achieved by digitalizing the logistics to prevent another pandemic [ 87 , 88 ]. Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) : Real time applications are possible and data integrity and full access control is ensured.…”

“…Smart-contact technology, on the other hand, is one of the areas of BC technology that has received some slight attention in the literature, resulting in only two studies [21,112]. Furthermore, one article examining digitalization and smart contracts [113], another article evaluating visibility and smart contracts [114], one article assessing digitalization, visibility, and smart contact technologies [115], and one research topic also looked into digitalization, transparency, and smart contract technologies [116]. Finally, two of the reviewed articles dealt with all the BCTs at the same time [14,117].…”

“…Because of quarantine and the necessity for social distancing, the retail sector has developed online shopping services [72,120,121]. The transportation and logistics industry is another field that was engaged in BCT during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly those businesses that provide domestic and transnational freight transportation services [88,115]. Uncertainty regarding border restrictions, as well as diverse supply and demand circumstances, raised the necessity for these businesses to employ additional technologies [20,22].…”

“…Existing work already suggests leveraging the benefits of blockchain technology to advance established processes. However, these efforts mainly focus on logistics or supply chain-specific improvements [14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22], i.e., they are usually considering a single, well-established pillar of research (P1 Õ). Similar to the focus of our work, first efforts to combine blockchain technology with manufacturing [23][24][25] or IIoT [26] have been made.…”
