Digitality: A reality check

Abstract: The condition of digitality and the associated concept of digitalism are increasingly important today. Our ever-more digital societal context means that many are experiencing a digital life where reality and digitality blur in their distinction in many people's digital lives. This paper considers these aspects with respect to digital culture, especially in the context of heritage and museums. In particular, we look at developments since a previous 2014 paper by the authors and speculate on possible future deve… Show more

“…Human engagement with computational culture has grown exponentially during the Covid-19 pandemic, increasing peoples digital experiences [9][30], so that much of a person s average day is spent engaging in a virtual world, in which everyday life activities are translated into digital states of being and interaction to the point where real life often feels disconnected from the physical world. A new virtual culture is developing that depends on a computational framework enhanced by new computing power that incorporates all digital media through computational methods in ways that mirror the human senses of seeing, hearing, talking, visual recognition, and touch, potentially transmitted over neural networks simulating the human brain, set in a framework of artificial intelligence and machine learning.…”

“…Driven by the global digital ecosystem that merges diverse cultures and heritage landscapes, computational culture brings vast archival resources together to serve 21 st century needs in education, digital research, and human inquiry, while also facilitating a human-centered approach. Since the Covid-19 pandemic took hold in March 2020, we continue to witness computational culture and digitality gain new ground with unprecedented speed as real life continues to be subsumed by virtual life [9]. This enables emerging technological trends to become fully entrenched in day-to-day life as online education replaces face-to-face teaching, learning, and social interaction.…”

“…Although the advance of digitality is inevitable [20,21], there are critical choices in how and where it is applied, why and for what purpose and outcomes, how it serves and enhances human experience, education, quality of life, and importantly, the roles and responsibilities reserved for human work and participation that will more and more be a measure of human relationships with AI systems and robots.…”

“…Thus, if upon entering the museum there are no digital dimensions to be found, many visitors are likely to feel isolated. As reality more than ever bows to digitality and virtuality [1], intensified by the coming-soon Metaverse, the incarnation of virtual worlds, where human identity is being absorbed in avatar states of being. Surely, it is time for computational culture to take its place in physical museums and connect with the global cultural community and ecosystem.…”
