The publication presents a picture of modern steelworks that is evolving from steelworks 3.0 to steelworks 4.0. The paper was created on the basis of secondary sources of information (desk research). The entire publication concerns the emerging opportunities for the development of the steel producers to Industry 4.0 and the changes already implemented in the steel plants. The collected information shows the support environment for changes in the steel sector (EU programs), the levels of evolution of steel mills, along with the areas of change in the steel industry and implemented investment projects. The work consists of a theoretical part based on a literature review and a practical part based on case studies. The work ends with a discussion in which the staged and segmented nature of the changes introduced in the analyzed sector is emphasized. Based on the three case studies described in the paper, a comparative analysis was conducted between them. When we tried to compare methods used in the three analyzed steel producers (capital groups): ArcelorMittal, Thyssenkrupp, and Tata Steel Group, it can be seen that in all organizations, the main problem connected with steelworks 4.0 transition is the digitalization of all processes within an organization and in the entire supply chain. This is realized using various tools and methods but they are concentrated on using technologies and methods such as artificial intelligence, drones, virtual reality, full automatization, and industrial robots. The effects are connected to better relations with customers, which leads to an increase in customer satisfaction and the organizations’ profit. The steel industry will undergo further strong changes, bringing it closer to Industry 4.0 because it occupies an important place in the economies of many countries due to the strong dependence of steel producers on the markets of the recipients (steel consumers). Steel is the basic material needed to make many products, and its properties have been valued for centuries. In addition, steel mills with positive economic, social, and environmental aspects are part of the concept of sustainability for industries and economies.

The article describes an innovative metrizable idea for systemic assessments of product quality within the baking industry. Complex product quality analysis requires the employment of metrizability criteria for factors that impact the quality of the product, and these are called determinants. Therefore, such analysis is only possible with the use of systems engineering. A system represents the potential of a manufacturing process, of major impact on quality. Composites of the manufacturing process make up the determinants of bread quality, grouped into three sets: raw materials, manufacturing technology, and manufacturing organization and technique. This paper also contains methodological implications for the construction of algorithms for manufacturing process potential determinants. Metrizable product quality assessment is a very important issue in the context of its implementation in manufacturing companies. Its use allows for obtaining comprehensive data on the quality status of a product. It is an important tool for analyzing and forecasting modern quality trends. The method presented in the article is new, innovative, and practical; and its vector representation may prove useful in Quality 4.0. The method could be an important point of reference for managers, directors, and decision makers who must determine the best metrizability criteria for systemic product quality assessments, and could prove useful in Industry 4.0 in the bakery industry. The main value of the paper is the presentation of a new, extensive method for systemic assessments of product quality based on vector analysis in industrial organization. We trialed the method in the baking industry. We concluded that the method is a contribution to management science, especially in the field of quality management, because this approach is not used in business and is not described in relevant international literature.

Purpose:The research question is how do steel mills transform to smart mills. This is the purpose of this paper. Approach/Methodology/Design: Dynamic technological development forces enterprises to introduce changes in production. Enterprises expect digital production to enable them to optimize production more than ever before. The changes concern especially the adaptation and integration of digital technologies. The article is about key areas and determinants of change in the steel industry in Poland on the way of steel mills to digital technologies. The article is a compilation of theory and practice. On the basis of statistical information, data on key areas of change in the steel industry in Poland was presented in the paper. Findings: At the current stage of transformation of the steel industry in Poland to Industry 4.0, steel mills are investing in technologies to process data in real time and acquire IT systems along with computer services to compile solutions (installations), combining steel production technologies with IT applications. Steel production technologies are entwined with IC systems with access to IoT, Big Data and Cloud Computing solutions. Compact OT (operation tech) and IT (informatics) structures are emerging, which in the future will create a cyber-physical steel production system (CPSPS: Cyber-Physical Steel Production System). Practical Implications: The analysis and evaluation carried out in the article shows that a key factor affecting the development of this sector is the way to Industry 4.0. Presented analysis in the paper can be used by companies in the steel sector to build a development strategy towards Industry 4.0. Originality/Value: The topic of the article is very important because it focuses on changes and determinats in the Polish steel Industry unnder the conditions of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
