Digital zoom of the full-field digital mammogram versus magnification mammography: a systematic review

Abstract: Objectives To summarise and compare the performance of magnification mammography and digital zoom utilising a full-field digital mammography (FFDM) system in the detection and diagnosis of microcalcifications. Methods We ran an extended search in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Engineering Village and Web of Science. Diagnostic test studies, experimental breast phantom studies and a Monte Carlo phantom study were included. A narrative approach was selected to summarise and compare findings regarding the detection of … Show more

“…e optical fiber terminal images are filtered by means of templates of 3 × 3 and 5 × 5, respectively [18]. When a 3 × 3 template is used to smooth the image of the optical fiber terminal, the effect is good, while when a 5 × 5 template is used to process, the edge and details of the image appear obvious blur, which is not suitable for subsequent processing.…”

“…With advances in technology, FFDM has become widely used and direct digital zoom of FFDM images on workstation seems to be comparable in detection of microcalcifications. Øynes et al summarized diagnostic accuracy data for spot magnification and digital zoom at a threshold set to BI-RADS ≥ 4a (34). The ranges of sensitivity and specificity for spot magnification were 85%-100% and 50%-57%, respectively.…”

“…Mammography was obtained in CC and MLO views, and in some special patients, a medio-lateral view. Digital zoom utilising a full-field digital mammography system was used as the performance of digital zoom is comparable to magnification for detecting microcalcifications [ 11 ]. Microcalcifications were classified according to the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS, 5th edition) on the mammography by one breast radiologist and one breast surgeon, each with > 5 years’ worth of experience of reading mammograms, and all decisions were unanimous.…”
