Digital vs. Freehand Anterior Single-Tooth Implant Restoration

Abstract: Replacing a single tooth in the anterior maxilla is one of the greatest challenges in dentistry. Both functional and aesthetic results are to be strictly pursued. Planning and executing such a case through a totally digital methodology eventually guarantee many advantages, above all patient’s operative and postoperative comfort. To ascertain this, a BOP analysis was performed which allowed us to evaluate soft tissues health, and more; crestal bone resorption was measured to evaluate hard tissues stability. Thi… Show more

“…The ultimate influence of the implant placement procedure, freehand or computer-assisted implant placement, has hardly been worked out so far. In a case series, Baldi et al could not find any differences in the restoration of maxillary anterior teeth with these two different procedures [ 32 ]. They see the advantages of the digital approach in the fact that a consistent prosthetic workflow can be maintained, for example with long-term provisional restorations fabricated in advance.…”

“…5 , 6 Furthermore, surgery to place implants is invasive, 7 which could be a barrier to treatment even when provided free of charge. 8 , 9 Edentulous patients are often older people (over 65 years) and may have significant bone resorption in their jaw and complex medical histories, affecting their suitability for implant treatment.…”

“… 21 , 22 Clinicians all over the world are searching for reliable solutions to treat edentulous patients with reduced bone volumes trying to optimise the implant’s macro and micromorphology and analysing the behaviour of peri-implant tissue. 6 , 9 , 23 30 Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is a reliable and validated solution, 31 34 but it is invasive and has extended treatment times.…”
