This study focuses on calibration and test campaigns of an IoT camera-based sensor system to monitor occupancy, as part of an ongoing research project aiming at defining a Building Management System (BMS) for facility management based on an occupancy-oriented Digital Twin (DT). The research project aims to facilitate the optimization of building operational stage through advanced monitoring techniques and data analytics. The quality of collected data, which are the input for analyses and simulations on the DT virtual entity, is critical to ensure the quality of the results. Therefore, calibration and test campaigns are essential to ensure data quality and efficiency of the IoT sensor system. The paper describes the general methodology for the BMS definition, and method and results of first stages of the research. The preliminary analyses included Indicative Post-Occupancy Evaluations (POEs) supported by Building Information Modelling (BIM) to optimize sensor system planning. Test campaign are then performed to evaluate collected data quality and system efficiency. The method was applied on a Department of Politecnico di Milano. The period of the year in which tests are performed was critical for lighting conditions. In addition, spaces’ geometric features and user behavior caused major issues and faults in the system.

In the Industry 4.0 era, the Digital Twin has become one of the most promising enabling technologies supporting material flow. Although the literature on the Digital Twin is becoming relatively well explored, including a certain number of review papers, the context of the Digital Twins application in internal transport systems has not been investigated so far. This paper thoroughly reviews the research on the Digital Twins applied in internal transport systems concerning major research trends within this research area and identification of future research directions. It provides clarification of various definitions related to the Digital Twin concept, including misconceptions such as a digital shadow, a digital model, and a digital mirror. Additionally, the relationships between terms such as material handling, material flow, and intralogistics in the context of internal transport systems coupled with the Digital Twin are explained. This paper’s contribution to the current state of the art of the Digital Twins is three-fold: (1) recognition of the most influential and high-impact journals, papers, and researchers; (2) identification of the major research trends related to the Digital Twins applications in internal transport systems, and (3) presentation of future research agendas in investigating Digital Twins applied for internal transport systems.

This paper deals with the design and implementation of a universal cyber-physical model capable of simulating any production process in order to optimize its logistics systems. The basic idea is the direct possibility of testing and debugging advanced logistics algorithms using a digital twin outside the production line. Since the digital twin requires a physical connection to a real line for its operation, this connection is substituted by a modular cyber-physical system (CPS), which replicates the same physical inputs and outputs as a real production line. Especially in fully functional production facilities, there is a trend towards optimizing logistics systems in order to increase efficiency and reduce idle time. Virtualization techniques in the form of a digital twin are standardly used for this purpose. The possibility of an initial test of the physical implementation of proposed optimization changes before they are fully implemented into operation is a pragmatic question that still resonates on the production side. Such concerns are justified because the proposed changes in the optimization of production logistics based on simulations from a digital twin tend to be initially costly and affect the existing functional production infrastructure. Therefore, we created a universal CPS based on requirements from our cooperating manufacturing companies. The model fully physically reproduces the real conditions of simulated production and verifies in advance the quality of proposed optimization changes virtually by the digital twin. Optimization costs are also significantly reduced, as it is not necessary to verify the optimization impact directly in production, but only in the physical model. To demonstrate the versatility of deployment, we chose a configuration simulating a robotic assembly workplace and its logistics.
