Digital twins and their use in future power systems

Abstract: The electric power sector is one of the later sectors in adopting digital twins and models in the loop for its operations. This article firstly reviews the history, the fundamental properties, and the variants of such digital twins and how they relate to the power system. Secondly, first applications of the digital twin concept in the power and energy business are explained. It is shown that the trans-disciplinarity, the different time scales, and the heterogeneity of the required models are the main challenge… Show more

“…There are many different definitions of Digital Twins which can vary from industry to industry and are especially tied to the complexity and reliability requirements of the systems in place [43], [44]. In the context of power systems, it has been a growing topic of discussion, particularly in transmission and distribution systems [45], [46]. Standards and working groups are also dealing with such a subject such as the "IEEE Task Force on Digital Twin of Large Scale Power Systems".…”

“…From the viewpoint of the virtual twin [35], simulation refers to the critical imitating capabilities of DT technology, and simulation indicates a broader range of models; since it does not consider the real-time data exchange between the physically existing object, it is a part of the DT rather than another term for it.…”
