Digital Twin for Accelerating Sustainability in Positive Energy District: A Review of Simulation Tools and Applications

Abstract: A digital twin is regarded as a potential solution to optimize positive energy districts (PED). This paper presents a compact review about digital twins for PED from aspects of concepts, working principles, tools/platforms, and applications, in order to address the issues of both how a digital PED twin is made and what tools can be used for a digital PED twin. Four key components of digital PED twin are identified, i.e., a virtual model, sensor network integration, data analytics, and a stakeholder layer. Very… Show more

“…In electricity markets, DTs are promising solutions for sustainability, control of energy assets, demand-side management, control of energy assets, reliable energy distribution, and monitoring of energy grid operations [25]. Danilczyk et al [26] proposed a DT to address security issues and detect potential failures in a microgrid, such as instabilities and failures in power distribution, in a timely manner.…”

“…The CNS model, developed in Freer et al (2021), is a carbonefficient digital twin of the UK's industrial freight transport network for cargo and tanker transportation, which has been used to model BECCS supply chains in a macro-energy system analysis. A digital twin is a virtual representation of assets or networks that allows for the simulation of processes or interactions within a virtual version of the assets or networks to allow for system optimization or learning (Zhang et al, 2021). The CNS model simulates and calculates the spatial explicit supply chain emissions of specific BECCS supply chains to generate high spatial resolution carbon performance heatmaps for the UK.…”

“…Digital twins are digital models, based on big data in real time, which could optimize the functioning of the PEDs. Zhang et al [189] explore the potential of digital twins to enhance sustainability in PEDs. The sensors acquire information (i.e., occupancy, carbon footprint and thermophysical parameters) which are reworked to monitor indoor air quality, energy balance, costs, etc.…”
