Digital transformation and environmental performance: Evidence from Chinese resource‐based enterprises

Abstract: Digitalization is of great significance for resource-based enterprises to break through the dual constraints of resource and environment. Based on the data of China's A-share resource-based listed enterprises, this study empirically examines the direct effect and transmission mechanism of digital transformation on the enterprises' environmental performance. The study finds that digital transformation significantly enhances the environmental performance of enterprises by stimulating green technology innovation,… Show more

“…The development and application of digital technology require enterprises to use resources and continuously carry out technological innovation activities (Vial, 2019). With the massive impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on the global economy and the escalating impact of the worldwide climate crisis, people have gradually realized that digital transformation and sustainability should be regarded as complementary growth drivers in exploration and practice (Ghobakhloo et al, 2022; Xu et al, 2023). On the one hand, through digital transformation, enterprises can optimize the use of resources and reduce waste to reduce the impact on the environment, and can also improve energy efficiency and accelerate the promotion of clean energy (Chen & Hao, 2022; Feroz et al, 2021).…”

“…The answer to this question can provide deeper understanding to the effect of government environmental punishment. Based on the above stuffs, referring to Li et al (2023) and Xu et al (2023), this paper adopts the pollutant discharge fee rate of operating income to measure the environmental performance ( EPIN ). The reason for using pollutant discharge fees to measure the environmental performance of enterprises are as follows.…”

“…Referring to Xu et al (2023), we use the classical mediation effect model to test the mechanism between CEO green experience and environmental performance, which is modeled as follows. EPi,tgoodbreak=α0goodbreak+α1Greeni,tgoodbreak+α2Controlsi,tgoodbreak+μigoodbreak+ϵtgoodbreak+δngoodbreak+εi,t Mediatingi,tgoodbreak=β0goodbreak+β1Greeni,tgoodbreak+β2Controlsi,tgoodbreak+μigoodbreak+ϵtgoodbreak+δngoodbreak+εi,t EPi,tgoodbreak=γ0goodbreak+γ1Greeni,tgoodbreak+γ2Mediatingi,tgoodbreak+γ3Controlsi,tgoodbreak+μigoodbreak+ϵtgoodbreak+δngoodbreak+εi,t where Equation (2) tests the effect of Green on EP , and when the coefficient α1 is significant, it indicates that the baseline regression results pass the test.…”
