Digital Radiographic Evaluation of Hand-Wrist Bone Maturation and Prediction of Age in South Indian Adolescents

Abstract: The results of this study showed significant association between hand-wrist skeletal maturation levels and CA. Digital radiographic assessment of hand-wrist skeletal maturation can be used as a better choice for predicting average bone age of an individual because of its simplicity, reliability and lesser radiation exposure.

“…Formerly, several studies reported no significant difference between the developmental stages of teeth 38 and 48 (Soheim, 1993;Stavrianos et al, 2008;Mohammed et al, 2014). Our results also found no significant difference between teeth 38 and 48 because teeth 38 and 48 do not differ in development.…”

“…For males, only SMI 1 and 4 that their results showed 1.2 and 1.35 years lower mean age. In others hand, for the rest SMIs, their results showed higher mean chronological ages (Mohammed et al, 2014b). In general, their subjects showed relatively delayed skeletal maturity while this present study showed around 1 year advanced skeletal maturity (Table 17).…”

“…The growth spurt stage during or before adolescence has a significant impact on both orthodontic planning and the retention of results after orthodontic treatment [ 9 ]. Observation of changes in the size and shape of the hand and elbow bones on radiographs can be used to identify bone growth, bone formation, and its early manifestations of maturation [ 10 ]. Assessment of bone ossification using a hand-wrist radiograph is traditionally considered a reliable indicator of maturation [ 11 , 12 ].…”
