Digital radiographic equipment in the Belgian dental office

Abstract: A survey was performed among Belgian dentists to evaluate the use and management of digital radiographic equipment. The majority of respondents work as general dental practitioners. One out of eight sets of equipment for extraoral exposures is digital. For intraoral radiography, 30% of the equipment is digital. While exposure time is reduced by about 50% for digital intraoral radiography compared with conventional radiography, no differences can be found between different conventional film speed classes. “…Despite the potential to reduce exposure by 60%, rectangular collimation use was only employed by 5% of participants. This is equivalent to overseas studies also finding very limited usage of rectangular collimation . A possible explanation is that rectangular cones need to be separately purchased and installed, which could be seen as an unnecessary hassle, or practitioners being unaware of their benefits.…”

“…Two of these were also reports from Belgian surveys, whereas the others were conducted in Turkey, England and Wales, Syria, and Uganda. [1][2][3][4][5][6] From this table it is clear that there are some similarities, for example the use of rectangular collimation, and some huge differences, for example the availability of panoramic dental equipment. The overall conclusion of all these studies, including the present one, is that there is still a great deal of work to be done to ameliorate the quality of radiographs and the knowledge and attitude of GDPs regarding dentomaxillofacial radiology.…”

“…This may be defined as one that is selected at the convenience of the researcher or where subjects are easy to recruit for a study. An example of convenience sampling is the 2005 study by Gijbels et al, 73 which was performed or Belgian dentists to evaluate the use of digital radiographic equipment. A questionnaire was included in a dental magazine that was freely distributed to Belgian dentists.…”
