Digital repositories typically improve the efficacy with which GLAMR organizations can manage their digital content and ensure its discoverability. Repositories are consequently a key enabling technology and have come to dominate the digital service offerings of many organizations. This chapter will provide a background to digital repositories, their emergence, and their typical characteristics. We will first seek to define digital repositories and will go on to explore several prominent repository types, resulting in the presentation of a 'digital repository typology'. The concept of discoverability is central to our understanding of repositories and is a core concern of this chapter too. We will therefore explore the principal attributes of repository discoverability, including consideration of the most significant digital repository discoverability technologies and users' typical routes to repository content discovery.

Ponovna upotreba istraživačkih podataka zavisi od stepena do kog se podaci mogu iskoristiti bez ograničenja za akademsku zajednicu. Diverzitet ciljnih grupa takođe je jedan od pokazatelja kvaliteta upotrebe podataka. Otvorena i slobodna upotreba istraživačkih podataka odvija se u unutar relevantnih zakonskih okvira i političkih odluka, određenih od strane nadležnih vlasti. Da bi arhivi imali jasne smernice razvoja, a korisnici garanciju do kog nivoa je rad arhiva usklađen sa najboljom praksom, uvedeni su nivoi sertifikacije. U ovom radu detaljno je opisan CoreTrustSeal okvir sertifikacije, na primeru dva operativna arhiva u društvenim naukama, Data Centra Srbija u društvenim naukama, koji funkcioniše kao nacionalni arhiv podataka i Arhiva družboslovnih podatkov iz Slovenije. Cilj rada je upoznavanje šire naučne zajednice sa kompleksnom temom digitalnog arhiviranja i diseminacije podataka u nauci.

Large-scale distributed digital library systems with aggregated metadata provide platforms for resource discovery and retrieval. For researchers, aggregated metadata offers a potential for big data analysis and exploration of digital knowledge growth. The paper reports the findings of the study that investigated the distribution of the date elements in the metadata aggregated in the Polish Federation of Digital Libraries and related it to the types of libraries. The purpose of this study was to address the gap in research about heterogeneous digital libraries and explore the dynamics of their growth. The authors included timeline characteristics of the development of Polish digital libraries and proposed a new dynamics parameter – resource release interval. They used histograms, which have been grouped according to the organizational and thematic criteria, developed for this study. All charts are characterized by two similar maximum points. Their shapes and ratio have been analysed by both statistical and visual methods. The shape of resource release interval charts revealed characteristic differences for libraries types. The proposed approach, based on time characteristics, is an important step in the development of systematic classification of digital libraries and digitizing institutions. It can be also considered as a new tool in monitoring the dynamics of digital knowledge growth.
