Abstract: Injection‐locked oscillators are shown to act as narrow‐band tunable fillers for FM signals if the modulation rate is much larger than the locking bandwidth. The filtering action of the injection‐locked oscillator for FM signals is found analogous to that of a high Q passive cavity. The effective Q of the injection‐locked oscillator can be as high as 105 if the stability of the injected signal carrier and oscillator frequencies is better than 106. The injection locking of the solid‐state oscillator has been studied from the viewpoint of various applications such as modulation, detection, regeneration and amplification of signal in communication systems. The injection locking oscillation with harmonics exhibits various peculiar phenomena which are not observed in the single‐mode oscillator with single resonant circuit. This paper discusses the double‐mode oscillator composed of fundamental and third harmonic oscillations. The major results are as follows: (1) The effective increase of the Q value for the fundamental frequency due to the presence of the third harmonic is evaluated in terms of the effective external Q; (2) It is shown that the locking equation for the phase in the simultaneous oscillation of fundamental and third harmonic frequencies, is of the same expression as that of the basic equation second‐order loop (with imperfect integrator) in the phase‐locked loop (PLL). The equivalent loop gain is defined from such a viewpoint; (3) There exists a jumping phenomenon in the oscillator output, when the frequency of the injection signal is varied. This is the result of a sudden change of the injected signal frequency affecting the amplitude to an on‐off behavior. This property can be applied to the detection of FSK signal. These results of analysis were compared with the experiment, and satisfactory agreement was obtained.

This paper discusses the phase regeneration characteristics of the three‐mode oscillator with two‐phase PSK signal injection composed of three resonators for the fundamental, second and third harmonics and a negative resistor. As the basic synchronization property of the oscillator, it is shown that two stable phase synchronization modes exist as follows. When the oscillator oscillates synchronously to the fundamental and the third harmonic frequencies, and the external signal with the frequency equal to the second harmonic is injected, synchronization takes place migrating among three frequencies with two stable phases. Then the phase regeneration of the oscillator for the injected phase‐modulated signal is discussed. When the change of the input signal phase is small, the oscillator output phase tends to remain at the original stable phase. When, however, the input phase approaches the other stable phase, the output phase changes stepwise to the other stable phase. Thus, the output signal has the phase fixed to either of the two stable phases. Such a phase regeneration phenomenon is demonstrated by the numerical solution for the simplified equation for the amplitude and phase of the oscillator. Finally, a three‐mode oscillator is constructed which oscillates at the fundamental frequency of 3.5 MHz. It is verified experimentally that the characteristics as analyzed by the theory are realized.

We analyze a proposed scheme of detection of phase‐shift‐keyed signals using an injection‐locked oscillator the bandwidth of which is much less than the modulation rate. The output of the oscillator is a carrier with essentially all of its modulation removed. We analyze the effect of noise and signal modulation on the phase of this reference tone and compute its effect on the probability of detection error. If a suitable encoder and decoder are used for the transmitted signal, this technique can provide nearly ideal coherent demodulation.
