Digital Pathology Transformation in a Supraregional Germ Cell Tumour Network

Abstract: Background: In this article we share our experience of creating a digital pathology (DP) supraregional germ cell tumour service, including full digitisation of the central laboratory. Methods: DP infrastructure (Philips) was deployed across our hospital network to allow full central digitisation with partial digitisation of two peripheral sites in the supraregional testis germ cell tumour network. We used a survey-based approach to capture the quantitative and qualitative experiences of the multidisciplinary t… Show more

“…The study was set in a large academic teaching hospital Cellular Pathology Department in 2019 prior to implementation of a fully digital pathology workflow for all surgical histology and referral cases which was completed in 2020 ( 13 ). The throughput is ~340,000 surgical histology and immunohistochemistry slides per year, together with 4,100 extra-large slides, and 40,000 referral slides.…”

“…For example, reporting discrepancies between original and central expert opinions regarding GCT histological subtype, lymphovascular invasion, and pathological stage occurred in 31, 22, and 23% of cases, respectively [ 49 , 50 ]. Digital pathology is likely to become an important method of facilitating data sharing among centres for this purpose, besides being useful for its algorithms of analysis which open further research opportunities [ 51 , 52 ]. Building of representative tissue-microarrays could also be instrumental to validate novel protein biomarkers by immunohistochemistry in a simple and practical manner.…”

“…The majority of histopathology trainees polled in a 2019 survey saw the introduction of DP into their training as a positive step [9]. Furthermore, there is potential to develop supraregional networks, streamlining the process where certain cases require external review [10].…”
