Digital Microfluidic Sampler for a Portable Capillary Electropherograph

Abstract: A new sample introduction/analysis approach was developed by combining a digital microfluidic (DMF) device with a portable capillary electrophoresis (CE) analyzer based on short separation capillary and contactless conductivity detection. The DMF sample injection was performed by transporting sample and buffer droplets in succession under the CE capillary inlet end allowing the capillary to be immersed into the sample/buffer droplet, and CE separation was performed by applying a high voltage between the (groun… Show more

“…The same strategy was used to couple DMF sample preparation to integrated microfluidic emitters for nanoelectrospray MS (79). In a related method, DMF was coupled with a portable capillary electrophoresis instrument (37). Sample droplets and run buffer droplets were actuated to the inlet of a separation capillary located on top of the electrode array.…”

“…Capillary electrophoresis performs electroseparation of the ionic compounds, based on the size-tocharge ratio of the ions, which are transported electrokinetically in the carrier liquid. The electrocapillary forces drag the ions into the capillary channel while the fluidic sample approaches the inlet of the microchannel [ [102][103][104]. Capillary electrophoresis is capable of separating particulate substances like cells, amino acids, proteins, peptides, mitochondria, or bacteria [ 105 ].…”
