Digital labelling in the retail environment: a domain-specific innovativeness perspective

Abstract: Purpose This is an exploratory study leveraging a domain-specific innovativeness (DSI) perspective to understand adoption of QR code delivered mobile marketing. Specifically, the purpose of this paper is to explore the roles of “innovativeness” and “risk aversion” on QR code adoption and usage in the low-involvement context to address tensions between risk and innovation literatures. “…Particularly, standardized synthesis graphical systems (like the traffic light system or choices checkmark symbol) could increase the perception of product healthiness, guiding the consumer during the selection and purchase processes [80,126]. Regarding warning labels, the triangular symbol with a white background and the signal word, "High in" is more visible to consumers, capturing their attention and informing their food purchases better than the signal words "A lot of" and the octagonal symbol [91,92]. Moreover, more attention could be given to the choice of elements like background, wording style, and picture.…”

“…In retail, the use of smart tags powered with RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology helps firms manage their inventory and optimize the store layout, reducing customer pain points. In addition, tags that include QR codes offer customers additional product information, which enables more informed purchase decisions (Tanner et al ., 2019). Approximately 40% of respondents said that smart tags and smart devices for in-store sales assistants contributed to a frictionless shopping experience for customers.…”

“…The rate and tendency to use new innovations are affected by individuals' perceptions, characteristics and product categories (Patil et al, 2020). Thus, numerous researchers have examined the effects of domain-and actualized-innovativeness (Esfahni and Reynolds, 2021;Lim and Park, 2013;Tanner et al, 2019). Based on prior study findings of the hierarchical innovativeness to understand consumer's adoption of new technology, our study examines the effects of consumer innovativeness in three levels: innate (personal), domain-specific (technological) and contextspecific actualized (fashion) innovativeness (Jordaan and Simpson, 2006;Midgley and Dowling, 1978).…”
