Digital Hydraulic Winch Drives

Abstract: This paper presents the planned use of digital displacement high torque low speed motors to drive large winches in off-shore and maritime applications. The digital displacement technology uses forced actuation of high- and low pressure valves for each cylinder chamber, i.e. valves are opened and closed by actuation forces independently of cylinder pressure and supply pressures. Motors equipped with the technology are well suited for low speed secondary controlled operation including start and st… Show more

“…Although this method enhanced the displacement resolution compared to an FSD strategy, it was unclear whether the same technique could be applied to a DDM. A unique method, termed "creep mode", was presented by Larsen et al [19] for managing DDMs at exceptionally low speeds. This method, falling under the sequential partial-stroke category, relies on the gradual movement of the motor's shaft from one-moment equilibrium to another by selectively pressurizing or depressurizing one chamber at a time.…”

“…Each cylinder is provided with two main poppet valves, and each valve is Pilot operated by a 3/2 spool valve. Moreover, a group of researchers from Diinef company, MacGregor company, and the University of Agder, attempted to broaden the usage of digital displacement high torque low-speed motors; the objective was to drive large winches in offshore and maritime applications (150-ton range) by employing fast-acting Pilot valves [131].…”

“…For very-low speeds, the sequential partial-stroke strategy offers a fast response which is limited only by the actuation time of the valves, but energy losses are significantly increased. A method that is referred to as creep mode was introduced by Larsen et al (2018) for controlling DDMs at very low speeds. The method belongs to the sequential partial-stroke category and relies on slowly moving the motor's shaft from one force equilibrium to the next by pressurizing or depressurizing one chamber at a time.…”
