Digital Grid: Communicative Electrical Grids of the Future

Abstract: Abstract-To support a high penetration of intermittent solar and wind power generation, many regions are planning to add new high capacity transmission lines. These additional transmission lines strengthen grid synchronization, but will also increase the grid's short circuit capacity, and furthermore will be very costly. With a highly interconnected grid and variable renewable generation, a small grid failure can easily start cascading outages, resulting in large scale blackout. We introduce the "digital grid,… Show more

“…Energy is forwarded to local segments toward granted users by a power switch. A power switch has been considered but for direct current (DC) [25]. However, handling of alternating current (AC) and energy storage interfaces as a feasible deployment are of interest.…”

“…A basic transmission grid represents a current bulk power supply system from the power plant to mainly the pole transformer. A conventional wide-area synchronized grid is subdivided into small or medium sized cells, and connected through asynchronous and coordinated control power exchanges and the subdivided grid is called digital grid cell as in [1]. Some of the consumers inside the cell have PV generators.…”

“…We consider a smart grid to be integral to the realization of such a system. A digital grid [1] and informatization of energy [2,3] have also been proposed as components of such a system. Common specifications of smarttaps [4], on-demand power supply [5], power coloring [6], power packetization, and routing technology [7][8][9] have been examined practically.…”

“…Close monitoring of the grid's performance may be achieved by deploying parallel (auxiliary) sensing networks [4]- [13]. Concerns about ensuring working paths, which are perpetually energized translate into additional management complexity [11], [14]. Therefore, the adoption of a controlled distribution of power, which is seamlessly coupled with grid monitoring, becomes an important part of grid management.…”

“…Approaches to verify customers identification with an address before the start of an energy transmission can be applied to determine the electricity path [11]. However, the one-to-one interconnection required by these approaches limits its scalability, in terms of the number of connected customers.…”
