Digital Fluid Technologies for the Steel Industry

Abstract: Digital fluid systems are controlled solely by onoff valves, in contrast to analogue fluid systems which use continuously adjustable valves. Many digital fluid systems have been in practical use for some decades. The steel industry relies on several fluid technologies. Apart from the handling of the liquid steel, several other fluid processes exist to fulfill indispensable functions; examples include cooling, motion control, torch cutting, descaling, and lubricating. Many of these processes need better control… Show more

“…For pneumatic and hydraulic actuators, research on the structure and functional design enables this type of actuator to achieve complex motions with simple strategies. Further, the efficiency of these actuators has been improved through the integration of motors, pumps and valves [170]. Recently, the combination of pneumatic and hydraulic actuators and textiles allows us to see new possibilities [22] which make the pneumatic/hydraulic wearable robots not limited to medical treatment and rehabilitation.…”

“…They need to possess a high switching frequency and be capable of swiftly transitioning from fully open to fully closed positions in under 5 ms. Additionally, they should minimize pressure losses, accommodate high flow rates, and maintain a compact size [8]. However, it is worth noting that the current highest achievable switching frequencies for the fastest valves range from 50 to 150 Hz, and for very small valves, they can reach up to 1000 Hz for short-term operation [26]. These characteristics have led to use of HFSVs in the automotive industry, particularly for controlling the ABS (Anti Brake-locking System) brakes of cars and actuating wet clutches, specifically dual clutch systems, which contribute to enhancing vehicle safety [27], [28].…”

“…As a result, the pressure 𝑝 𝑛 increases above the supply pressure 𝑝 𝑠 , allowing the fluid to be redirected back to the supply line (HP) through check valve (a) [40]. Scheidl et al investigated the application of digital hydraulic buck converters in advanced casting systems to facilitate mold oscillation [26]. These converters were employed as substitutes for conventional spool valves.…”
