“…In the past k x was commonly used for k r due to hardware restrictions. It has since become possible to calculate the distance to faults by solving equations directly following the introduction of numerical platforms [1] [2]. Henceforth it has not been difficult to calculate distance using the full complex value with a modern numerical relay.…”

“…The combination of recursive low pass filter algorithm and distance protection algorithm using solution of differential equation is commonly used. Normally, the higher-frequency components during the fault transient can be eliminated by anti-aliasing analog filter of the protection, but it is difficult to eliminate the low frequency components close to fundamental frequency by the analog filter and digital filter within a permitted time delay, though the differential equation approach is always true under transient condition, the high-accuracy measurement against transient waveforms can not be achieved because of the inferior differential approximation of di/dt using periodical data samples [2], the affection of low frequency harmonics close to fundamental frequency on the convergence of the calculation of the inductance L in differential equation may result in that under some criteria conditions, the protection may maltrip for reverse fault and refuse tripping for intemal forward fault, and the protection may overreach trip for remote end extemal fault as a result of the harmonic influence.…”
