Digital devices for teaching cardiac auscultation - a randomized pilot study

Abstract: Background: Competent cardiac auscultation is a declining skill. Digital stethoscopes and hand-held echocardiography (HHE) are modern devices which may improve the accuracy of heart murmur recognition and diagnosis. Their incremental value compared to conventional examination has not been evaluated in depth. Objectives: Our aim was to quantify the utility of digital stethoscopes and HHE as teaching aids to improve medical students’ diagnostic accuracy in the evaluation of heart murmurs using a novel clinically … Show more

“…A hypothesis in the use of the ANOVA test with repeated measures is the matrix homogeneity of the covariances of the dependent variables [71,72]. This hypothesis is determined through the Box test, with the following results (table 5): Thus, the significance level showed that in this test a value of 0.087 was obtained, which exceeds 0.05 and, therefore, with a probability grade of 95% that the hypothesis on covariances matrix observed of the dependent variables are equal between groups.…”

“…The lack of an objective standard for evaluating breath sounds restricts the development of relevant clinical research. In the field of heart auscultation, one study implemented the findings of three cardiologists as the GS to quantify the utility of electronic stethoscopes and hand-held echoes in the evaluation of heart murmurs ( 14 ). In a study that used breath sounds to validate the diagnostic accuracy of an AI algorithm for interstitial lung disease for rheumatoid arthritis patients, high-resolution CT was used as the gold standard ( 15 ).…”

“…4,5 Data suggest that incorporating digital stethoscopes in the learning process, can improve trainee auscultatory performance. 6,7 Since auscultation of the pump is an important part of the physical examination of a patient with a durable LVAD, an audio-visual learning experience (e.g. phonocardiography) may be a better tool for teaching.…”
