BackgroundChange and progress through digitalisation is also becoming increasingly important in the field of professional care and the associated increasing demands on the skills of nursing staff. The European Union considers digital skills to be one of the eight key competences for lifelong learning. At present, few reliable statements can be made about the status of digital skills in professional nursing care in Germany. The aim of this study was to map the current status of digital competences of executives in full inpatient care facilities in Germany and to identify possible differences to reference values of academics.MethodologyThis survey is based on a Germany-wide cross-sectional survey in full inpatient care facilities (N = 8,727). The survey instrument Digital Competences Framework (DigComp 2.2) according to the European Union's reference framework was used as the basis for recording the digital competence characteristics. The statistical analysis was descriptive and inferential (t-test, two-sided, p < 0.05).ResultsOut of 15 items across five dimensions, significant differences for nine items can be determined. The competence levels of the participating managers from the full inpatient care facilities were lower compared to the reference sample.DiscussionIn order to be able to counter the skills discrepancy shown by the study in the future, it is of central importance to deepen knowledge and skills in the area of digitalisation in the care context.

Digitale Kompetenzen spielen mittlerweile in nahezu jedem Lebensbereich eine wichtige Rolle. Das Bildungssystem als Ganzes, insbesondere aber auch die Hochschulen, sind daher gefordert, Bildung in diesem Bereich anzubieten. Um dieser gesellschaftlich hoch relevanten Aufgabe nachkommen zu können, bedarf es der breiten Reflektion. In diesem Themenheft werden nicht nur die Definition und die Bedeutung digitaler Kompetenzen im Hochschulbereich aus verschiedenen Perspektiven beleuchtet, sondern es wird auch auf die Messung und Förderung dieser eingegangen. In insgesamt elf Beiträgen aus dem deutschsprachigen Hochschulraum werden verschiedenste empirische Erkenntnisse aus der Hochschulpraxis neben innovativen Lehrkonzepten und Förderansätze vorgestellt und Anregungen zur Weiterentwicklung und Beforschung digitaler Kompetenzen im Hochschulkontext präsentiert.

Teaching and learning processes should be subject to continuous change due to the constant evolution of social, educational and technological environments, which ultimately results in higher levels of student engagement. The current paper describes the technological changes faced by higher education institutions as a result of digital transformation challenges. Further, transformational and transactional leadership styles’ effectiveness is regarded within the context of higher education institutions’ digital enhancements. Over time, these factors have led to contextual shifts that have disengaged students from learning and thus self-development. The current research aimed to examine how higher education institutions should apply different leadership styles within digitally transformed contexts so as to increase students’ learning engagement and reduce the risk of failure in their future developments within (inter)national labor markets. Data gathering and analysis involved a qualitative approach: an online survey was distributed, resulting in 856 responses. Through structural equation modeling, the data revealed a valid higher education digital transformation assessment tool; the results also emphasize the increased role of transactional leadership, as opposed to the traditional transformational style, within a highly digitized higher education institutional framework. Consequently, the linear relationship of students’ work engagement with leadership proved to also be enhanced by quadratic effects. The current study stresses the importance of internal and external peers in higher education performance through high levels of student learning (work) engagement through leadership and a uniformly developed digitally transformed higher education environment.
