Digital Breast Tomosynthesis: Concepts and Clinical Practice

Abstract: Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is emerging as the standard of care for breast imaging based on improvements in both screening and diagnostic imaging outcomes. The additional information obtained from the tomosynthesis acquisition decreases the confounding effect of overlapping tissue, allowing for improved lesion detection, characterization, and localization. In addition, the quasi three-dimensional information obtained from the reconstructed DBT data set allows a more efficient imaging work-up than imagin… Show more

“…Novel mammographic techniques such as tomosynthesis may be promising especially in unmasking malignancies in dense breasts in young women. The standard of breast imaging characterized by improved screening and diagnostic outcomes is attributed to digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011 [68]. As was demonstrated by prospective European studies, the addition of DBT led to an increase in cancer detection rate (CDR) from 27% to 91% [69,70].…”

“…The combination of DBT and mammography resulted in significant gains in the sensitivity and specificity of cancer detection compared with DM alone ( Fontaine et al, 2019 ; Li et al, 2019 ; Skaane et al, 2019 ). Due to its improvements in patient diagnosis efficiency, DBT is becoming the standard of care in both screening and diagnostic breast images ( Chong et al, 2019 ).…”
