The problem of beamforming using diversely polarised antenna array is addressed in the study. With the attempt to avoid signal cancellation caused by very small snapshot number, and/or look direction error and/or polarisation mismatch, the polarisational reconstruction matrix inversion based beamformer is developed for both the narrowband and wideband cases. The major contribution is on the reconstruction of the narrowband case interference-plus-noise covariance matrix and wideband case focused interference-plus-noise covariance matrix, for the cases of both completely polarised and partially or randomly polarised interferences, by the rank-1 and rank-2 spatial spectrum techniques, respectively. The performance of the proposed beamformer, against small snapshot number, look direction error, polarisation mismatch, and focusing error, was evaluated by extensive simulations, and compared with the polarisational extensions of some existing popular polarisation insensitive beamformers, in terms of the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio values and the experimental deviation of the signalof-interest (SOI) estimate. The influences of direction difference between SOI and interference, degrees of polarisation of SOI and interference, and integrating range for reconstruction on beamforming performance are also studied.

In this paper, we present an analytical beam-forming approach capable of synthesizing differently shaped beams for circularly symmetric conformal apertures with axisymmetrical excitations. Closed form formulas of far-field radiation are mathematically derived in order to obtain rotationally symmetric radiation patterns for typical conformal apertures frequently used in satellite and flight vehicle applications, such as the cone-surfaced, truncated cone-surfaced, hybrid disc-cone and sphere-cone apertures. Based on these formulas, various shaped beams, including pencil, flat-topped and bimodal beams can be rapidly achieved by adjusting either the geometric parameters or the excitation distributions of the conformal apertures. The deterministic approach proposed in this paper provides an efficient method to synthesize specified beam shapes for the aforementioned conformal apertures. Collaborating with conventional optimization based beam forming approaches, the proposed approach can effectively shorten the time-consuming optimization in the beam forming of circularly symmetric conformal arrays, especially large conformal arrays.

This paper describes the pattern synthesis method of two kinds of conformal array antenna using the Enhanced Adaptive Genetic Algorithm (EAGA). One is the 1×16 conformal array antenna on a curved cylindrical metallic surface with quadratic function, and the other is the 18-element conformal arrary antenna on a metallic surface obtained by the rotation of a quadratic function curve around the axis. The active element pattern is utilized in the pattern synthesis. Especially for the case of the rotated-type conformal array antenna the transformed active element pattern obtained from the Euler's angle rotation of the active element pattern of the planar concentric array is utilized, which reduces the synthesis time a lot. To verify the validity of the proposed synthesis method the MATLAB results are compared with the MWS results. Furthermore, for the case of 1×16 conformal array antenna the measured results are compared with the MATLAB synthesized results.
