Digital acoustic communication in air using parametric loudspeaker

Abstract: We propose an acoustic communication system using parametric loudspeaker that emits a communication signal into a limited area. We found that the use of minimum shift keying is suitable, since it has the potential and second harmonic signal that occur when the emit signal is distorted during propagation due to the effect of air. Experiments revealed that the proposed system emits an audible signal to a limited area, achieves a BER of 10 -3 at Eb/N0 of 10 dB. Thus, it outperforms benchmarks using other modulati… Show more

“…In acoustic data communication, the receivable area can be decreased by using directional loudspeakers. Fukuda et al [2] developed an acoustic communication system using a single parametric array loudspeaker and commercial software, and they proposed a modulation method for acoustic data communication. By contrast, in this letter, we consider using multiple parametric array loudspeakers to limit the receivable area to a single spot.…”

“…In acoustic data communication, data are communicated using microphones and loudspeakers. Technologies for acoustic data communication have attracted attention and are used in various fields [1,2] since many devices (e.g., smartphones) are equipped with loudspeakers and microphones and it is easier to develop original data communication methods compared with using radio data communication.…”

“…The use of minimum shift keying (MSK) has been proposed as a communication method for parametric loudspeakers. 21) However, single-carrier MSK schemes are not robust against the inter-symbol interference (ISI) that occurs in a multipath fading environment. Although the use of parametric loudspeakers for OFDM may be suitable for acoustic communication in a multipath fading environment, it is challenging due to the nonlinearity of the acoustic channel.…”

“…This technique of being able to broadcast low frequencies in a directive (i.e. more directed) way has opened up the possibility of research into new underwater communications techniques [25,26,54,55]. For this second calibration step, two types of parametric signals are defined: sinusoidal and sweep.…”
