Digenean Larvae Parasitizing Cerastoderma Edule (Bivalvia) and Nassarius Reticulatus (Gastropoda) From Ria De Aveiro, Portugal

Abstract: This work reviews the significant community of digenean trematodes observed infecting the edible cockle, Cerastoderma edule, and the snail Nassarius reticulatus in the channel of S. Jacinto, Ria de Aveiro Estuary, Portugal. The Digenea observed comprise 15 species, belonging to the families Bucephallidae (1), Echinostomatidae (4), Gymnophallidae (3), Lepocreadiidae (1), Microphallidae (1), Monorchiidae (1), Renicolidae (1), Strigeidae, (1), and Zoogonidae (2). The species were studied by light microscopy and s… Show more

“…Besides occurrence records, many authors described this species in its first intermediate host: firstly with basic descriptive works regarding the sporocysts form (Deltreil and His 1970;Pelseneer 1906;Russell-Pinto 1993) and the cercaria larvae (Deltreil and His 1970;Matthews 1973;Pelseneer 1906;Russell-Pinto 1993), and secondly with ultrastructure descriptions by electron microscopy (James et al 1966;Pina et al 2009;Russell-Pinto et al 2006). Authors are unanimous referring that B. minimus infects preferentially adult cockles as first intermediate hosts (Baudrimont et al 2003;Bowers 1969;de Montaudouin et al 2000;Derbali et al 2009;.…”

“…First host effects B. minimus infection in C. edule starts on the gonad and in the digestive gland (de Montaudouin et al 2000;Desclaux et al 2002;Pina et al 2009;Russell-Pinto 1993;Russell-Pinto et al 2006). On one hand, in the gonad, the parasite causes castration of the organism (Carballal et al 2001).…”

“…The commonest families found were Microphallidae, Renicolidae, Echinostomatidae, Philophtalmidae, Lepocreadiidae, and Zoogonidae (e.g., Lauckner 1980, Galaktionov and Skirnisson 2000, Fredensborg et al 2005, Russell-Pinto et al 2006, Curtis 2007. We found parthenitae corresponding to six species and to five families, Microphallidae (2), Hemiuridae, Philophtalmidae, Renicolidae and Zoogonidae.…”

The very low prevalence of Bolbosoma vasculosum and the absence of digeneans could possibly be attributable to a lower or sporadic consumption of the typical intermediate hosts in benthic habitats, namely isopods (1.9%) and amphipods (3.1%) for the transmission of acanthocephalans and molluscs for the transmission of digeneans (Køie 1992, Russell-Pinto et al 2006). …”
