Digenea in the surubim Pseudoplatystoma corruscans (Spix and Agassiz, 1829) (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) of the upper São Francisco River, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract: The specimens of surubim, Pseudoplatystoma corruscans (Spix and Agassiz, 1829), an important food fish with high commercial value in the Upper São Francisco River, were collected downstream from the Três Marias Dam, in the municipality of Três Marias, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Thirty-six individuals were examined and among the parasites, four species of Digenea were found: Witenbergia witenbergi Vaz, 1932 and Tylodelphys sp. (metacercarie), both with prevalence above 10%, followed by Acanthostomum gnerii … Show more

“…In the São Francisco River Basin, the records on the parasite fauna of pimelodids were established for Conorhynchos conirostris (Valenciennes, 1840) by Pinto et al (1974), Pinto and Noronha (1976), Vicente et al (1985), and Brasil-Sato and Santos (2005); for Pseudoplatystoma corruscans (Spix & Agassiz, 1829) by Rego and Gibson (1989), Kohn et al (1997), and Corrêa and Brasil-Sato (2008); for Bergiaria westermanni (Lütken, 1874) by Moreira et al (1991) and Vicente and Pinto (1999); for P. maculatus by BrasilSato and Pavanelli ( , 1999Pavanelli ( , 2000Pavanelli ( , 2004, Brasil-Sato (2003), and Monteiro et al (2010); and for P. pohli by Martins et al (2012). In this last work, the authors have established the first record of a parasite species, Prosthenhystera obesa (Diesing, 1850), in the gall bladder of P. pohli.…”

“…Entre os híbridos, houve maior parasitismo por metacercárias em alevinos de cachapinta. Corrêa & Brasil-Sato (2008) descreveram a ocorrência dos digenéticos Witenbergia witenbergi, Tylodelphys sp., Acanthostomum gnerii e Acanthostomum sp. em pintado (P. corruscans) oriundo do Rio São Francisco, com menor prevalência do que a observada no presente trabalho.…”

“…Chappell (1969) also revealed that the infestation level of parasites attained a negative relationship with the length of host fish. On the other hand, Corrêa and Brasil-Sato (2008) stated that the total length of the hosts does not influence the parasite prevalence. Results show that the prevalence was higher in female fish (77.57%) compared to male one (70.73%) (Table 4).…”
