Diffusion (DOSY) 1H NMR as an Alternative Method for Molecular Weight Determination of Poly(ethylene furanoate) (PEF) Polyesters

Abstract: Poly(ethylene furanoate) (PEF) is a promising 100% biomass-derived alternative to poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), but challenges all solution characterization methods due to its insolubility in most common solvents. Diffusion (DOSY) 1 H NMR can be an alternative, reliable and fast method to analyze molecular weights of PEF polyesters. Calibration with PET standards yields excellent agreement of DOSY predictions with the absolute M n and M w values obtained via size exclusion chromatography equipped with mu… Show more

“…We have previously shown that diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY‐NMR) has potential for use in monitoring lignin MW . This technique initially measures the diffusivity of molecules in solution and this parameter can then be related to the MW of both small molecules, and polymers including lignin ,. In our previous report, diffusion coefficients of lignin fractions of variable MW were linearly correlated with MW data generated via GPC using the Mark‐Houwink‐Sakurada (MHS) relationship .…”

Jerschow and Müller [8] and with pulsed field gradient diffusion experiments already by Callaghan and Pinder. [9] Recent papers demonstrated the power of diffusion experiments for the determination of molar masses of poly(ethylene furanoate) polyesters, [10] polystyrene (PS), [11] poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), [11,12] as well as polyethylene glycol. [12,13] Other DOSY applications presented by Li et al described the determination of molar masses of polymers in diverse living/controlled polymerizations.

“…With this respect, a promising method to access on-line the propagation and termination rate is represented by in-situ diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) NMR [28], which might allow for measuring at the same time the residual monomer concentration and molecular weight. Furthermore, relevant information about the solution behavior of polar and ionizable molecules such as the MAA monomer and polymer as well as their interactions with the reaction environment (i.e., water and electrolytes) could be obtained by the application of computational chemistry, namely molecular dynamics simulations.…”
