Diffusion-Based Nanonetworking: A New Modulation Technique and Performance Analysis

Abstract: In this letter, we propose a new molecular modulation scheme for nanonetworks. To evaluate the scheme we introduce a more realistic system model for molecule dissemination and propagation processes based on the Poisson distribution. We derive the probability of error of our proposed scheme as well as the previously introduced schemes, including concentration and molecular shift keying modulations by taking into account the error propagation effect of previously decoded symbols. Since in our scheme the decoding… Show more

“…However, both CSK and MoSK suffer from ISI caused by molecules from previous transmissions. Molecule concentration shift keying (MCSK) proposed in [34] borrows the ideas from CSK and MoSK. In [35], the authors propose three novel modulation techniques, i.e., concentration-based, molecular-type-based, and molecular-ratio-based, using isomers as messenger molecules for nano communication networks via diffusion.…”

“…As shown in literature [13], a new modulation technique based on the method of using different types of molecules for consecutive symbol time slots. This technique referred as Molecular Concentration Shift Keying (MOCSK).…”

“…This technique referred as Molecular Concentration Shift Keying (MOCSK). The work in [13], also proposes a new system model for propagation of molecules and the propagation channel based on the Poisson Distribution. This model is more realistic and efficient than the channel based on the Binomial Distribution.…”

“…There have been a number of recent works focusing on transceiver analysis [8]- [10] for such diffusion channels, cooperative systems [11], as well as information theoretic studies [12]- [14]. However, most of the recent literature has neglected the electron transfer mechanism occurring amongst living cells, and its role in cell-cell communication.…”
