This paper contributes to the expanding landscape of methodological approaches and tools for investigating organizational sustainability communication. Our method allows for exploring two-way interactions between company risk and sustainability reporting. We present a basic but extendable method, while using only publicly available data. Our method adds additional features to established methods: It covers only risk (not returns), as theory mainly supports risk-reporting relationships and not return-reporting relationships. It tests for reverse causality of the risk-reporting relationship and links complementary explanations to different theoretical schools. Our method tests the model by employing data from a market with mandatory sustainability reporting to avoid self-selection bias.

Developing dynamic organizational theories; three system dynamics based research strategies

There is an increasing attention for dynamic organizational theories. The system dynamics methodology, although originally developed for practical contributions, is increasingly used to develop dynamic theoretical contributions. However, these studies differ substantially in the research designs they apply. Some of these studies adopt a quantitative approach while others adopt a qualitative approach. Some of these studies focus on testing existing theories, while other studies focus on building theory or combine both theory testing and building. This variety hinders an effective understanding of the methodology. To increase clarity, this paper provides a systematic review of system dynamics based theoretical contributions in organizational theory between 1990 and 2016. By looking at differences and commonalities I show how various methodological decisions combine into three distinctive internally consistent system dynamics based research strategies for theoretical contributions. These results support making methodological decisions in future research designs when applying system dynamics to develop dynamic organizational theories.

Often, signaling research in the strategy and economics literature postulates the existence of an ostensible signal and then empirically tests its veracity, utilizing cross-sectional data. We argue that this static approach does not allow researchers to fully incorporate the concept of equilibrium in their analysis, thereby potentially violating a key axiom of signaling theory. We propose that a dynamic analysis of signals can address this omission, and then conduct such an analysis. We use empirical data on warranty coverage offered by automobile manufacturers in the U.S. market extending from the first warranty offered by the industry in 1960 through to 2008. Our findings support the notion that signaling behavior differs in periods of equilibrium and disequilibrium, in turn influencing signal accuracy.
