Diffuse UV erythemal radiation experimental values

Abstract: [1] Measurements of diffuse UV erythemal radiation (UVER) using a shadowband have been corrected using the models proposed by Drummond (1956), LeBaron et al. (1990), andBatlles et al. (1995). Two different methods were used to validate these models: intercomparison with an Optronic OL754 spectroradiometer and comparison with the values simulated by two radiative transfer codes, SMARTS and SBDART. For this comparison only clear days have been used. The corrected experimental values were analyzed in order to stu… Show more

“…This is because these models were originally developed for the entire bandwidth of the solar spectrum where the diffuse component is only 10% of the total irradiance , in contrast to the UVER range the diffuse com- ponent on clear days gets to values of 60% (Utrillas et al, 2007); therefore the conditions of anisotropy do not correspond to the predictions of the models.…”

“…This band prevents direct sun radiation to reach the detector unit, which makes diffuse irradiance measurements, also in the horizontal plane (Figure 1). The diffuse UVER measurements obtained with the shadowband have been corrected using the modified Batlles model proposed by Utrillas et al (2007). The corrected experimental values have an uncertainty estimated at 1%.…”

“…The diffuse component of the solar radiation is usually quantified by the diffuse fraction (f ) (Liu and Jordan, 1960;Iziomon and Aro, 1998;Utrillas et al, 2007), defined as the ratio between the diffuse (D) and the global (G) solar irradiances at the surface. The diffuse fraction describes the effectiveness of the atmosphere in scattering the incoming radiation.…”

“…For instance, diffuse UVER irradiance under a standard beach umbrella can reach 34 % of global UVER irradiance (Utrillas et al, 2007) and up to 60 % in tree shade (Parisi, 2000). This percentage increases notably with high load of aerosols and presence of clouds, especially in the case of broken clouds (Alados et al, 2000;Calbó et al, 2005;Esteve et al, 2010).…”

“…The instrument was calibrated in the National Institute for Aerospace Technology (INTA) at El Arenosillo, Spain [3]. The diffuse UVER measurements obtained with the shadowband have been corrected using the modified Batlles model proposed by Utrillas et al [4]. This correction has an uncertainty estimated of 1%.…”
