Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the orbit: A tertiary eye care center experience in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Primary Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) represents the 2nd most common lymphoma occurring in the orbit, after Mucosal Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT) lymphoma. A total of 5 cases of ocular adnexal DLBCL were diagnosed over 25 years of experience at our tertiary eye care center. Two cases involved the lacrimal sac and one case involved the lacrimal gland. In this paper we are presenting the remaining 2 non-lacrimal cases of DLBCL. The first case is a 32 year old male who was referred with a slowly growi… Show more

“…The peak incidences of lacrimal sac tumor are in fifth decade of life [4]. Localized painless or painful medial Our patient presented at the age of 28 years old which is younger compare to other cases reported before [2][3][4][5][6]. Review done by Gao et al [7]showed mean age at the time of diagnosis was 56.4 years old.…”

“…1). In these tumors (MALT) was the predominant subtype [7,8,[12][13][14], while (DLBCL) is the second most common tumor [15]. In our study population MALT patients had higher significant survival rates than DLBCL.…”

“…Primary malignancy of the eye is infrequent [ 1 ]. Primary lymphoma of the eye is a rarer event occurring at a rate of 0.3% per 100,000 persons in the immunocompetent population [ 2 ], with reports of various lymphoproliferative processes including extranodal marginal zone lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, DLBCL, and mantle cell lymphoma [ 3 ].…”

“…We present a case of a DLBCL originating within the right orbit, specifically within the lacrimal gland, which is a rare and atypical presentation [ 4 ]. DLBCL is an uncommon form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and seldom occurs within the orbit [ 3 ] with most cases of ocular lymphoma being MALT lymphoma [ 5 ]. Our case highlights a typical presentation of this exceptionally rare disease.…”
