Diffractive Higgs production from intrinsic heavy flavors in the proton

Abstract: We propose a novel mechanism for exclusive diffractive Higgs production pp → pHp in which the Higgs boson carries a significant fraction of the projectile proton momentum. This mechanism will provide a clear experimental signal for Higgs production due to the small background in this kinematic region. The key assumption underlying our analysis is the presence of intrinsic heavy flavor components of the proton bound state, whose existence at high light-cone momentum fraction x has growing experimental and theor… Show more

“…[11], the presence of high-x intrinsic heavy quark components in the proton's structure function will also lead to Higgs production at high x F through subprocesses such as gb → Hb; such reactions could be particularly important in MSSM models in which the Higgs has enhanced couplings to the b quark [13].…”

“…Interesting examples that have been proposed in the literature are: diffractive production of neutral Higgs bosons [27], and charged Higgs production at the LHC [28,29]. Application of our results to the latter process will be presented in [12].…”
