Diffraction Efficiency Characteristics for MEMS-Based Phase-Only Spatial Light Modulator with Nonlinear Phase Distribution

Abstract: Micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS)-based phase-only spatial light modulators (PLMs) have the potential to overcome the limited speed of liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) spatial light modulators (SLMs) and operate at speeds faster than 10 kHz. This expands the practicality of PLMs to several applications, including communications, sensing, and high-speed displays. The complex structure and fabrication requirements for large, 2D MEMS arrays with vertical actuation have kept MEMS-based PLMs out of the market… Show more

“…For a hologram with plenty of information channels, switching the ADKs can even lead to the presentation of the refreshed information at different terminals. It provides a possibility to parallelly extract and distribute information encoded in many OAM channels to multiple locations at one time with light in a short range, just like the scenery described by the wireless communication system, so called Lifi 50 . In this way, our protocol based on the cross convolution theorem can boost the capacity for information processing which has the potential to be extended to other applications such as construction of a high-capacity short-range optical communication system.…”

“…In addition, the phase levels are not equally distributed across the range of 0 to 2π but are distributed rather non-uniformly. In Figure 2a, the solid line plots the mechanical displacement of MEMS pixels of sixteen phase levels [16]. The maximum displacement of 100% modulates phase in 2π at a wavelength of 633 nm.…”

“…For an even faster refreshing rate, a contender is the Texas Instruments DLP, that has a refreshing rate of up to 20 kHz. Texas Instruments is also developing a micro-electro mechanical system (MEMS) capable of modulating the phase of the laser beam [ 96 , 97 ]. Such a device, used for holographic printing, would have the advantages of being able to make the image, focus the beam, and scan the material, all at the same time.…”
