Differentiation in the Atlantic salmon industry: A synopsis

Abstract: The value chain for farmed salmon has experienced substantial changes over the past decades as a result of innovation in production technology, logistics, distribution and marketing that have helped facilitate the rapid production growth. The high level of control over the production environment in principle makes it possible for Atlantic salmon to be tailored on a number of product attributes or dimensions in response to requirements from different customer groups. However, when compared to meat production, d… Show more

“…Second step: Complexity analysis of the system's structure. By reviewing the NSVC's structure [24,28,[84][85][86], we identified certain structural, dynamic, and sociopolitical elements in the system that might add to or reduce its level of complexity in relation to SDG integration (see Table 5). “…Hence, trade data reflect the industry's performance well. Norway has a diverse seafood sector with a significant aquaculture industry, groundfish and pelagic fisheries (Cojocaru et al, 2019;Asche et al, 2020) and trade a wide variety of product forms to a large number of countries (Straume et al, 2020a;Cojocaru et al, 2021). The export sector consists of a large number of export companies with different degrees of product and market specialization, where some products are highly dependent on a few companies and markets, while others are well diversified and potentially much more flexible in responding to market shocks (Oglend and Straume, 2019;Straume et al, 2020b;Asche et al, 2021;Oglend et al, 2022).…”

“…Norwegian salmon exports are of more general interest as it can be regarded as a bellwether of the broader effects of Covid restrictions on the international seafood trade. Norway is the largest salmon producer worldwide ( Iversen et al, 2020 ), salmon is the second largest aquaculture species by value ( Garlock et al, 2020a , Garlock et al, 2020b ), and salmon is among the most traded fish species with the most advanced logistics ( Kumar and Engle, 2016 ; Asche and Smith, 2018 ; Cojocaru et al, 2021 ; Gephart et al, 2021 ). Norway exports >95% of its salmon production, with firms tending to focus on a few markets or regions ( Gaasland et al, 2020 ; Oglend et al, 2022 ) and a significant share is processed further after leaving Norway ( Asche et al, 2018 ; Asche et al, 2022a , Asche et al, 2022b ).…”
