Differentiation between Pure Mucinous Breast Carcinomas and Fibroadenomas with Strong High-Signal Intensity on T2-Weighted Images from Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to identify characteristics that can differentiate between pure mucinous breast carcinomas (PMBCs) and fibroadenomas (FAs) with strong high-signal intensity on T2-weighted images (T2-SHi) from dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI). Methods: The DCE-MRI tumor characteristics were compared and analyzed between 35 PMBCs and 70 FAs with T2-SHi. Results: Multivariate analysis revealed that delayed enhancement pattern was the only significant independent predictor… Show more

“…Therefore, any new lesion that arises in the breast post-menopausal, even if it looks like a fibroadenoma, should be biopsied. This study found that the maximum diameter of P-MC was significantly larger than that of FA, which was consistent with previous studies (10,27). According to the biological behavior of the tumor, malignant tumors increase rapidly in size, while benign tumors increase slowly or remain stable in size (24).…”

“…Due to different histopathologic characteristics and components, approximately 40% of FA is accompanied by myxoid or edematous changes ( 9 ), which makes it harder to distinguish from P-MC. P-MC and FA require different therapeutic approaches, so preoperative diagnosis is crucial ( 10 ).…”

“…Photosensitizer-carrying nanoparticles could increase the water solubility of photosensitizer molecules, enhance their tumor accumulation, thus improving the therapeutic efficacy and specificity of PDT [ 14 , 15 ]. Over the past decade, nanoparticle-based PDT have shown great promise in treatment of cancer, including lung cancer [ 16 18 ], achieving encouraging therapeutic efficacies [ 19 , 20 ]. In addition, nanotechnology provides a platform for the integration of multiple functionalities in a single construct with effective targeting, achieving the purpose of tumor imaging and diagnosis and treatment [ 21 , 22 ]…”

“…Accurate detection and treatment usually lead to a positive outcome. Currently, various imaging examinations, such as mammograms, ultrasounds, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have increased the incidental detection of breast tumors [5], [6]. In particular, dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI), which can compactly capture both anatomical and metabolic features, has been demonstrated as a great screening examination for those with a high risk of breast cancer [7].…”
